Leica Camera AG has introduced the Leica SL3, the next generation of their mirrorless full-frame system camera. This camera is designed to meet the rigorous demands of professional photographers, offering exceptional image quality, versatility, and ease of use. Although Leica has a relatively small market share compared to larger camera manufacturers, the company has a dedicated user base of professional photographers and enthusiasts who appreciate the brand’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship.
According to recent market research, Leica’s market share in the global digital camera market is estimated to be around 0.8%. However, the company’s sales have been steadily increasing over the years, with a reported revenue of €400 million in 2022, a 5% increase from the previous year. Leica has also seen a growing number of users adopting their mirrorless camera systems, with an estimated 200,000 users worldwide as of 2023.
At the heart of the Leica SL3 is a BSI CMOS full-frame sensor with Triple Resolution Technology, which can record raw files in DNG or JPEG format with a resolution of either 60, 36, or 18 MP. The camera boasts a dynamic range expanded to 15 f-stops and an impressive ISO range from 50 to 100,000, enabling it to deliver remarkably detailed images in all light conditions.
The SL3’s innovative autofocus system combines phase detection (PDAF), depth mapping (Object Detection AF), and contrast recognition (Contrast Detection AF) to create razor-sharp pictures even in dim light. Additionally, intelligent subject recognition supports the photography of dynamic scenes.
The camera’s lens bayonet, based on the L-Mount standard developed by Leica, is compatible with a wide range of lenses from all Leica camera systems and L-Mount alliance partners. The unique design of the image sensor and an external light sensor allows the SL3 to fully harness the potential of the renowned Leica M-Lenses, while the integrated in-body image stabilization further broadens their scope of application.
The Leica SL3 features an EyeRes viewfinder with a high-resolution optical system made of glass lenses, providing a crystal-clear view of the subject with up to 120 frames per second and a resolution of 5.76 million pixels. The camera also has a tiltable 3-inch high-res touchscreen, offering additional viewing angles for even more creative possibilities.
For video recording, the SL3 can capture footage in resolutions up to 8K, supported by efficient codecs such as H.265 and ProRes by Apple. A dedicated time code interface allows for professional image and sound synchronization on set. The new Maestro-IV processor with L² technology easily handles the vast amounts of data, resulting in pictures with magnificent color rendering and excellent noise performance.
The camera’s user interface has been optimized for enhanced user comfort, with improvements in ergonomics, tactile feel, and menu navigation. The distinct separation of photo and video modes, aided by a specific color code (red for photo mode and yellow for video mode), makes navigation even easier. The SL3’s main functions can be completely adapted to individual needs, thanks to freely assignable FN keys and optimized touch interaction in the menu.
The Leica SL3 is noticeably lighter and more compact than its predecessors, making it more comfortable to use. Its robust design and IP54 certification allow photographers to focus on capturing the shot in any weather and environment. Regular firmware updates, delivered through the Leica FOTOS app, ensure the camera stays current and future-proof.
The camera’s new interface and improved connectivity ensure a seamless professional workflow, with slots for CFexpress type B and UHS-II-SD memory cards, a USB-C port for high-speed data transmission, tethering, and power supply, as well as a full-size HDMI 2.1 output for external monitors or recording equipment. As a certified Apple “Made for iPhone and iPad” accessory, the Leica SL3 enables a direct connection to Apple products using the included USB-C cable.
