Case Construction Equipment developed its first electric backhoe in the industry, the Case 580 EV, capable of working like a conventional one. Its power and performance are equivalent to those of other diesel-powered backhoes from the Case product line. This innovative product is the result of its Zeus Project.
Backhoe loaders are ideal for electrification, as the wide range of operating cycles, from heavy to light operation, provides an excellent opportunity to convert consumed diesel engine hours into zero battery life – while providing the operator with an immediate torque response when needed.
At low idle, the diesel engine has reduced torque and takes extra time to adjust to meet load requirements. Electric motors, on the other hand, have an instantaneous maximum torque available at each operating speed.
The CASE 580 EV is powered by a 480-volt, 90-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery that can be charged with any 220-volt three-phase connection. Although the application will vary, it will be possible to work an eight-hour day on a single charge.
The accumulator drives the drive and hydraulic motors separately, resulting in the same hydraulic braking forces as a diesel-powered excavator and improving performance at the same time, regardless of the work to be performed.
The urban environment of a project will benefit from the elimination of CO2 emissions, as well as the reduction of noise generated by conventional equipment. CASE estimates that the 580 EV could save fleets up to 90% in annual vehicle maintenance and service costs.
The electrification of this equipment was carried out with Green Machine, Inc. and Moog, Inc., and with the direct contribution of public services and other businesses dedicated to converting a significant part of their fleets into fully electric backhoes.
The CASE 580 EV works like a neat CASE excavator – the power and performance expected from CASE is in line with the benefits of an electrified machine. The operator will experience the same digging, lifting and pulling operation as a diesel-powered machine, but in a quieter and emission-free workplace.
Although the 580 EV will sell at a higher starting price than diesel-powered backhoes, the price will be equivalent in about five years. Every CASE 580 EV comes standard with the CASE SiteWatch ™ telematics system for additional performance monitoring and management.
Following an agreement with Michelin, Case has added special tires to both the wheel loader and now the 580 EV. The company plans to deliver two units for US public service and expects to produce more single units throughout 2020, with a view to more serious production by 2021.
